The SPOT program has been developed under the umbrella of the Australian Companion Animal Council by the Animal Welfare League, the Australian Veterinary Association, Delta Society Australia and the RSPCA.
Funded for the three years 2007 through 2009 by the NSW Department of Local Government, SPOT (Safe Pets Out There), is a unique schools program about pet care and kindness and respect for all animals. It also incorporates a specific module about safe behaviour to reduce the incidence of serious dog bites in children.
The SPOT program is now being offered to all schools in NSW. The presentations are run by accredited volunteers including representatives from the partner organisations and local councils.
SPOT includes 3 modules:
Dog Safety,
Pet Care, and
Kindness and Welfare
SPOT has visited 23,809 children in NSW schools and been very well received. The Minister for Local Government celebrated SPOT's first birthday at Menai Primary School on Wednesday 25 July 2007.
